Research
Animal Network is dedicated to assisting the breeder community through research. Below is a list of research opportunities that are currently taking place. These projects are aimed at identifying the genes and mutations responsible for specific inherited diseases found in certain breeds. By submitting free samples, you can participate in the research into a healthy future for our dogs.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) 'affected' purebred dogs
Requirements:
1. Purebred dog
2. Diagnosed with PRA by a veterinary ophthalmologist
Process:
- Email askus@animalnetwork.com.au with the subject line 'RESEARCH', the copy of the Veterinary Ophthalmology exam report plus a copy of a 4-5 generation pedigree for review BEFORE sending a blood sample.
- Wait for a response to learn if your dog qualifies for free testing.
- Once approved, complete the form that will be sent to you and return with a cheek sample.
Hereditary cataract (HC) 'affected' purebred dogs
There are many types of cataracts. The two types of hereditary cataracts that are currently being researched include:
- Bilateral, Posterior Subcapsular type
- develops between 1.5 yrs and 3 yrs of age
- affected the following breeds: Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Rottweilers, Bernese Mountain Dogs, and English Springer Spaniels
- Bilateral Posterior Cortical type
- develops between 1 yr. and 3 yrs of age
- affects the following breeds: Siberian Husky, Samoyed and the Alaskan Malamute
Process:
- Email askus@animalnetwork.com.au with the subject line 'RESEARCH', the copy of the Veterinary Ophthalmologist exam report plus a copy of a 4-5 generation pedigree for review BEFORE sending a DNA sample.
- Wait for a response to learn if your dog qualifies for free testing.
- Once approved, complete the form attached here and return with a cheek sample.
